Synthesis of γ-sulfonyl δ-lactones and β-sulfonyl styrenes

A facile route to the synthesis of γ-sulfonyl lactones 5 and β-sulfonyl styrenes 6 has been developed, achieving moderate to good yields via the (1) NaH mediated Michael addition of β-ketosulfones 3 and methyl acrylate in refluxing THF and (2) NaBH4mediated stereoselective reduction/lactonization of δ-ketoesters 4 in boiling MeOH, or (3) boron trifluoride etherate mediated ring-opening of lactones 5 in MeOH at reflux.

Selective Mono- and Bis(alkoxycarbonylation)s of Olefins Catalyzed by Palladium in the Presence of Cu(I) or Cu(II) Chloride under Remarkably Mild Conditions. Application to the Synthesis of γ-Butyrolactone Derivatives

Palladium-catalyzed mono- and bis(alkoxycarbonylation)s of the olefins were controlled by the use of copper(II) and copper(I) chloride, respectively, in alcohol under normal pressure of carbon monoxide and oxygen at room temperature without any other additives. 3-Buten-1-ols gave the corresponding γ-butyrolactones and 2-oxotetrahydrofuran-3-acetic acid esters, respectively, in high yields.

Chalcone derivatives

The present invention provides new chalcone derivatives of the general formula: STR1 wherein R1 is a hydroxyl, carboxylic acid or sulphonic acid group or a carboxyalkoxy or sulphoalkoxy radical, R2 and R3, which may be the same or different, are hydrogen or halogen atoms, hydroxyl groups or alkoxy radicals and R4 is an alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, alkoxy, carboxyalkoxy, sulphoalkoxy or carboxyalkylcarbonyloxyalkyl radical or a carboxylic acid or sulphonic acid group, with the proviso that compounds of general formula (Ia) always contain at least one carboxylic acid or sulphonic acid group; and the non-toxic inorganic and organic salts of those compounds containing at least one carboxylic acid or sulphonic acid group, the compounds of the invention are useful for treating inflammatory and allergic conditions and for treating ulcerous conditions of the gastro-intestinal tract in humans.
