A hindered β-amino amide transient directing group effects di-trans-arylation of cyclohexanecarbaldehydes. The amide N-substituents are shown to affect yield and can enhance the rate of arylation compared with the α-amino acid. Addition of a pyridone ligand further enhanced reactivity. The reaction is successful for a range of aryl iodides, and various substituted cyclohexane carboxaldehydes, providing functionalized products from simple feedstocks. A mechanism is proposed evoking a transient enamine.

A highly diastereoselective annulation strategy for the synthesis of alicyclic ketones from diols and pentamethylacetophenone is described. This process is mediated by a commercially available iridium(III) catalyst, and provides efficient access to a wide range of cyclopentane and cyclohexane products with high levels of stereoselectivity. The origins of diastereoselectivity in the annulation reaction have been explored by a series of control experiments, which provides an explanation for how each stereocentre around the newly forged ring is controlled.

Catalytic generation of alkyl radicals from aldehydes via oxidative deformylation was realized using a cobalt-salen complex with H2O 2. The deformylation was thought to proceed through homolytic cleavage of peroxohemiacetal intermediates to provide even primary alkyl radicals under mild conditions. Variously substituted and functionalized hydroperoxides were obtained from corresponding aldehydes in good yield.
