We describe the use of phenyl trimethylammonium iodide (PhMe3NI) as an alternative methylating agent for introducing a CH3group in α-position to a carbonyl group. Compared to conventional methylating agents, quaternary ammonium salts have the advantages of being nonvolatile, noncancerogenic, and easy-to-handle solids. This regioselective method is characterized by ease of operational setup, use of anisole as green solvent, and yields up to 85%.

A new structure of saturated ring skeleton monoligated NHC-Pd-Imine complex was easily synthesized and unambiguously confirmed by X-ray single crystal diffraction. It was found to be an efficient and air-stable catalyst for the α-arylation of ketones. The reaction could be operated in air without any negative effect. Non-activated aryl and heteroaryl chlorides have been successfully applied in the reaction with only 0.5 mol% catalyst loadings under air atmosphere. Excellent to good product yields were afforded.

The structure of 3a was unambiguously confirmed by X-ray single crystal diffraction and it was an active catalyst in the Buchwald-Hartwig amination and α-arylation of ketones even at very low catalyst loadings (0.01 mol%).

A new method for the enantioselective reductive coupling of aryl alkenes with activated carboxylic acid derivatives via copper hydride catalysis is described. Dual catalytic cycles are proposed, with a relatively fast enantioselective hydroacylation cycle followed by a slower diastereoselective ketone reduction cycle. Symmetrical aryl carboxyclic anhydrides provide access to enantioenriched α-substituted ketones or alcohols with excellent stereoselectivity and functional group tolerance.
