We synthesized azo dye- and fluorescence-labeled cis-cinnamic acid analogues possessing inhibitory activity against lettuce root growth and a trans-isomer without bioactivity as a control probe. The radicles incubated with the azo dye-labeled analogue were stained red, with their tips especially deeply dyed. The fluorescent images of the radicles incubated with each of these molecular probes depicted that the root cap was fluorescence-stained. However, images of the control radicles prepared by staining with the trans-isomer fluorescent probe did not show emission at the root cap. These contrasts suggest specific localization of the cis-cinnamate analogue at the columella cells.

Silica-coated nano-Fe3O4-supported iminopyridine palladium complex as an active, phosphine-free and magnetically separable catalyst for Heck reactions

, (2017/04/21)
A novel magnetic nanoparticle-supported iminopyridine palladium complex was successfully prepared by attaching palladium acetate to iminopyridine ligand-functionalized silica-coated nano-Fe3O4. The as-prepared catalyst was well characterized and was evaluated in Heck reactions in terms of activity and recyclability. It was found to be highly efficient for the reactions of various aryl iodides and aryl bromides having electron-withdrawing groups with olefins under phosphine-free and inert atmosphere-free conditions. Moreover, the catalyst could be conveniently recovered using an external magnet, and the recyclability was influenced by the base in the Heck reaction. The catalyst could be reused at least six times with no significant loss in activity when triethylamine acted as the base.
Base Catalysis Enables Access to α,α-Difluoroalkylthioethers

supporting information, p. 1570 - 1573 (2017/04/13)
A nucleophilic addition reaction of aryl thiols to readily available β,β-difluorostyrenes provides α,α-difluoroalkylthioethers. The reaction proceeds through an unstable anionic intermediate, prone to eliminate fluoride and generate α-fluorovinylthioethers. However, the use of base catalysis overcomes the facile β-fluoride elimination, generating α,α-difluoroalkylthioethers in excellent yields and selectivities.

Abstract We present an allylic polyfluoroarylation reaction with broad substrate scope and excellent functional group tolerance, using organozinc reagents under mild conditions. A catalytic amount of triphenylphosphine oxide efficiently promotes iodine-zinc exchange reaction between polyfluoroaryl iodide and dimethylzinc, and the resulting phosphine oxide-activated polyfluoroarylzinc undergoes substitution reaction with allylic halides to afford the corresponding polyfluoroarylated products.

supporting information, p. 12960 - 12963 (2013/09/24)
A new dibromination reaction involving the combination of dibromomalonate as the bromonium source and a titanium bromide species as the bromide source has been developed. Enantioselective catalysis has been achieved through apparent ligand acceleration by a tartaric acid-derived diol.

Palladium-catalyzed carbene insertion into benzyl bromides
Greenman, Kevin L.,Van Vranken, David L.
, p. 6438 - 6441 (2007/10/03)
Palladium can catalyze the insertion of ethyl diazoacetate into benzyl bromides. The key step in the catalytic cycle is the migratory insertion of a carbene, derived from ethyl diazoacetate, into a Pd-C bond.
