Condensation of quinoxaline-5,6-diamine (I) with acyclic ketones in acetic acid followed by pyrolysis gives 2,4,5-trialkyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-diazepinoquinoxalines (II), 1,2-dihydro-3-phenylpyrazinoquinoxalines (VI) and 3H-imidazoquinoxalines (VII-IX).However, withcyclic ketones the diamine I yields 3',4'-cycloalkanospiro-diazepinoquinoxaline derivatives (X-XIII).
