    11b-Hydroxy steroid dehydrogenase type 1 (11b-HSD1) converts the biologically inactive glucocorticoids, cortisone (in man)  and 11-dehydrocorticosterone (in rodents), into their biologically  active metabolites, respectively cortisol and corticosterone, which  are known to act as functional antagonists of insulin in several target organs and tissues such as the liver, muscle, and adipose tissue  (Fig. 1).1 There is evidence implicating an excess of cortisol in tissues as a primary driver of insulin resistance and a critical point  for disease intervention.2
