ICIQ researchers observe the effect of magnetic fields on electrocatalytic processes

March 04, 2024

Researchers at ICIQ have confirmed the direct impact of an external magnetic field on the reaction mechanism of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) during water electrolysis to produce green hydrogen. Published in APL Energy, the study reveals that the magnetic field enhances the accumulation of active NiOOH species, leading to faster OER kinetics at the electrode surface. Led by Prof. J.R. Galán-Mascarós, Prof. Núria López, and Dr. Bahareh Khezri, in collaboration with the Institute of Advanced Materials (INAM), the research sheds light on the microscopic origin of this phenomenon, offering potential for optimization and exploitation. Using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and spectro-electrochemical analysis under operando conditions, the study provides concrete evidence of the magneto-electrochemical enhancement, showcasing the transformative potential of incorporating magnetic fields in electrochemical processes.
