Preparation of Sodium dithionite: this chemical can be prepared by Sodium bisulfite by the following reaction:
2 NaHSO3 + Zn → Na2S2O4 + Zn(OH)2

Uses of Sodium dithionite: this chemical is used as a reducing agent in aqueous solutions in some industrial dying processes. And it is used for water treatment, gas purification, cleaning, and stripping. Additionally, it can be used as a sulfonating agent or a sodium ion source in industrial processes. It can also be used as a means of lowering solutions' redox potential in physiology experiments. Furthermore, it is used to propagate a low Eh front in the subsurface in order to reduce pollutants such as chromium in environmental applications. It has also been used to stabilize polyacrylamide polymers against radical degradation in the presence of iron in chemical Enhanced Oil Recovery. Similarly, it is used to produce Rongalite, which is used as a bleach, in paper pulp, cotton, wool, Leather, Chrome Tanning agent and kaolin clay.
Na2S2O4 + 2 CH2O → 2 HOCH2SO2-+ 2 Na

When you are using this chemical, please be cautious about it as the following: it may cause fire. And it may liberate toxic gas in contact with acids. It is also harmful if swallowed. Please keep container tightly closed and dry. In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice. Moreover, after contact with skin, wash immediately with plenty of soap-suds.
