PhOH, Me2CO2 and alkanols plus 4-chlorophenol [106-48-9] or a mixt. of isomeric chlorophenols is completely degraded by a defined mixed culture with Pseudomonas sp. strain B13 as a chlorocatechol-dissimilating member of the community. Total degrdn. of the org. C was indicated by release of stoichiometric amts. of Cl- and low content of dissolved org. C in the cell-free effluents. During adaptation to high loads of chlorophenols the initial meta-cleavage activity was completely replaced by ortho-cleavage activity of type I and II.In this experiment, several chemicals are used like 16887-00-6 and 7440-44-0 In the fully acclimated culture, hybrid strains such as Alcaligenes sp. strain A7-2 were detected, which are more competitive than Pseudomonas sp. strain B13 with respect to chlorophenol degrdn. .

DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 60 (Waste Treatment and Disposal) The anaerobic biodegrdn. of mono- and dichlorophenol isomers by fresh (unacclimated) sludge and by sludge acclimated to either 2- (I) [95-57-8], 3- (II) [108-43-0], or 4-chlorophenol (III) [106-48-9] was evaluated by monitoring substrate disappearance and, in selected cases, prodn. of 14CH4 from labeled substrates. In unacclimated sludge, each of the monochlorophenol isomers was degraded. The relative rates of disappearance were in the order: o- > m- > p-. For the dichlorophenols in unacclimated sludge, there was a reductive dechlorination of the Cl group ortho to phenolic OH, and the monochlorophenol compds. released were subsequently degraded. 3,4-Dichlorophenol (IV) [95-77-2] and 3,5-dichlorophenol (V) [591-35-5] were persistent. Sludge acclimated to I, cross-acclimated to III but did not utilize II. This sludge also degraded 2,4-dichlorophenol (VI) [120-83-2]. 87-65-0 and 95-57-8 are also in the experiment. Sludge acclimated to II cross-acclimate to III but not to I. This sludge degraded IV and V but not 2,3- [576-24-9] or 2,5-dichlorophenol [583-78-8] . The specific cross-acclimation patterns obsd. for monochlorophenol degrdn. demonstrated the existence of 2 unique microbial activities that were in turn different from fresh sludge. The sludge acclimated to III could degrade all 3 monochlorophenol isomers and VI and IV. The active microbial population in this sludge appeared to be a mixt. of populations present in the I- and II-acclimated sludges, both of which could utilize III. Expts. with 14C-radiolabeled I, III, and VI demonstrated that these compds. were converted to 14CH4 and 14CO2. .
