Glass beads (150-200 mesh) were immersed in 10% trichlorooctadecylsilane [112-04-9] soln. for 8 h. and the glass beads were packed in a column. 2-(2-Pyridylazo)-5-diethylaminophenol soln. (0.05%) was added to Cd soln. (<0.06 mg/L) at pH 9.5. The Cd complex soln. was passed through the glass beads packed column and the column was eluted with an eluent (EtOH: 0.1 M HCl: CHCl3 = 7:2:1). The eluate was heated with 30 % H2O2 and NH2OH.HCl for the redn. of Fe3+ and then evapd. to dryness. The evapn. residue was dissolved with a supporting electrolyte and Cd was detd. by anodic stripping voltammetry. Detection limits were 0.01-0.12 mg Cd/L. The method was suitable for the anal. of river and seawater contg. < 0.1 mg Cd/L.

The method is simple and economical and can be carried out on a large scale. Thus, silica gel was treated with trichlorooctadecylsilane [112-04-9] and the remaining Cl was methoxylated and trimethylsilylated to give an alkyl group-bonded silica gel. Raw water (COD 70 ppm, bacteria count 6 ′ 105/mL), pre-treated to remove suspended solids, colloidal substances, and (free) salts, was passed through a purifying app. packed with the above silica gel; and after removal of bacteria, the effluent was sterilized with O3 to give ultrapure water (COD 0.1 ppm, bacteria £0.1/mL).
