Thus, a reactor contg. Co2(CO)8 0.34, I 0.14, and p-dioxane 14.0 g was pressurized to 1000 psi with a 1:2 (molar) CO-H mixt., heated to 180°, pressurized at 4000 psi with synthesis gas for 16 h, and cooled to give 23.9 g liq. product. The conversion of MeOH was 82%. The product contained EtOH 58, AcH 7, PrOH 14, and AcOMe 5%. The product contained 4605 ppm Co (96% Co recovery). A similar homologation run without I gave 78% conversion of MeOH to a product contg. 67% EtOH and 4% AcH, but the Co recovery was 2%.
