Nat., 111(981), 871-95 (English) 1977. CODEN: AMNTA4. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 4 (Toxicology) The growth of Thalassiosira pseudonana, Fragilaria pinnata, and Bellerochea polymorphia from temperate zone estuaries was less affected by 10 ppb polychlorinated biphenyl, 1 ppm p-bromophenyloctane (I) [51554-93-9], 100 ppb adamantane [281-23-2], and 10 ppm nitroethane [79-24-3] than the growth of the same organisms from the Sargasso Sea. Organisms which have evolved in and adapted to phys. variable environments (e.g. estuarine) are better able to tolerate any toxic compd. than would similar organisms adapted to a stable environment (e.g. ocean). Phytoplankton sensitivity to pollutants was correlated with membrane adaptation.
