DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 64 (Pharmaceutical Analysis) A TLC-titrn. method for the detn. of icariin (I) [489-32-7] in the above ground part of Epimedium (a medicinal plant) was established. A powd. sample was extd. with 70% EtOH to give an ext., which was filtered, evapd., and dissolved and dild. with MeOH to 50 mL. A 200-mL sample was chromatographed on a polyamide TLC plate by using CHCl3-MeOH-HCO2H (9:1:0.5) as eluent, and the band was scraped and subjected to coulometric titrn. EtOH-1M KBr-2N HCl (:15) was used as the electrolyte. Recoveries were 98.4-101.9%.

Icarriin, paeoniflorin and protocatechualdehyde were identified by TLC technique and the content of icariin and paeoniflorin were detd. by HPLC method. Icariin, paeoniflorin and protocatechualdehyde were clearly sepd. in the TLC chromatogram. The results of HPLC anal. for icariin were: a linear range of 92.4-3326.4ng, r=0.999 9, an av. recovery of 100.4% with a RSD of 1. 139-85-5 and 489-32-7 are also in the experiment.84% and the corresponding data for paeoniflorin were: 93.0-3 348.0ng, r = 0. 999 7, an av. recovery of 100.3 % with a RSD of 1. 46 %. The qual. and quant. methods established are capable to be used for quality control of Rukangshu capsules. .
