Thus, 1-(2-anthryl)-ethyl methacrylate (I) [54720-11-5] was prepd. by the acylation of anthracene [120-12-7] with acetic anhydride (II) [108-24-7] in the presence of AlCl3 to give 2-acetyl anthracene [10210-32-9], which was reacted with ethanol [64-17-5] in the presence of Na borohydride to give 1-(2-anthryl)ethanol [22371-34-2], which was condensed with methacryloyl chloride [920-46-7] in the presence of Et3N to give I. 2-(Methacryloyloxy)ethyl 4,5,7-trinitro-9-fluorenone-2-carboxylate (III) [62694-16-0] was prepd. by the reaction of fluorene [86-73-7] with II in the presence of AlCl3 to give 2-acetyl fluorene [781-73-7], which was oxidized to fluorenone-2-carboxylic acid [784-50-9], which was nitrated to give 4,5,7-trinitro-9-fluorenone-2-carboxylic acid [24929-25-7], which was reacted with thionyl chloride [7719-09-7] to give 4,5,7-trinitro-9-fluorenone-2-carboxylic acid chloride [53410-48-3], which was reacted with 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate [868-77-9] in the presence of Et3N to give III. I (2 g) and 1.5 g III were reacted 18 h at 60.degree. in the presence of azobisisobutyronitrile to give .apprx.2 g 1-(2-anthryl)-ethyl methacrylate-2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl 4,5,7-trinitro-9-fluorenone-2-carboxylate copolymer (IV) [62694-17-1]. IV (.apprx.0.5 g) was dissolved in 5 mL THF, coated on a ball-grained Al substrate, and vacuum-dried. The electrophotog. response of the film was satisfactory, and the images produced were of acceptable quality.
