Vet., Univ. Torino, Turin, Italy). Ann. Fac. Med. Vet. Torino, 23, 324-45 (Italian) 1976. CODEN: AMVTAA. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 1 (Pharmacodynamics) Section cross-reference(s): 17 Nifuroxazide (I) [965-52-6] showed little toxicity to chicken and rabbits. When administered orally, 2 g I/kg was well tolerated by chickens. Rabbits showed good toleranct ot oral doses of 5 g I/kg. Chronic administration of 0.15 g I/kg/day to chickens, or addn. of 0.8% I to the feed of chickens for 6 months, or of 2% I to the feed of rabbits for 90 days, caused some wt. loss. Moderate histopathol. changes were caused by chronic I doses in the liver and kidney of chickens, and in the spleen and lung of rabbits. I had little effect on blood compn. and blood enzymes. Very low I residues were present in the muscles, kidney, and liver of chickens following chronic I administration.

- Fodder for raising birds for eating. Cagliero, Germano (Marxer S.p.A., Italy). Ger. Offen. DE 2717987 27 Oct 1977, 19 pp. (German). (Germany). CODEN: GWXXBX. CLASS: IC: A23K001-18. PRIORITY: IT 76-67988 23 Apr 1976. DOCUMENT TYPE: Patent CA Section: 18 (Animal Nutrition) Increased wt. gains and decreased feed expenditure can be obtained in raising broiler chickens and guinea fowl by addn. of 10-25 ppm nifuroxazid (5-nitrofurfurylidene-4-hydroxybenzohydrazide; I) [965-52-6] to the feed. Thus, 5, 10, and 15 ppm I in the soybean-based mixed feed of broiler hens increased wt. gains 1.3, 10.6, and 13.7%, and had 0.7, 1.5, and 6.6% feed sparing action, as compared with unsupplemented controls. I was not tetratogenic in mouse and rabbit tests, and its animal LD50 was >8 g/kg.
