Antioxidants

Antioxidants are molecules that inhibit the oxidation of other molecules, thereby protecting cells and tissues from damage caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS) and free radicals. Oxidation is a chemical reaction that can produce free radicals, leading to chain reactions that may damage cells. Antioxidants neutralize these free radicals by donating electrons, preventing cellular damage and oxidative stress, which are linked to various chronic diseases, aging, and inflammatory conditions. Common antioxidants include vitamins C and E, beta-carotene, and selenium, as well as endogenous compounds like glutathione and superoxide dismutase. Antioxidants are found in a wide range of foods, particularly fruits and vegetables, and are also available as dietary supplements.
