  • Synthesis of Oxaprozin
  • (or Oxaprozinum) (CAS NO.: ), with its systematic name of 2-propanoic acid, 4,5-diphenyl-, could be produced through many synthetic methods. This chemical is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), and it is often applied to solve the problems of inflammation, swelling, stiffness, and joint pain associated with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Following is one of the synthesis routes: (I) is condensed with succinic anhydride (II) in the conditon of heating at 120 C to produce benzoin hemisuccinate (III), and the yielding product is then cyclized with ammonium acetate in refluxing acetic acid.
