  • Purification of Indene
  • (CAS NO. ) can be shaken with 6M HCl for 24h (to remove basic nitrogenous material), then refluxed with 40% NaOH for 2h (to remove benzonitrile). Fractionally distd, then fractionally crystd by partial freezing. The higher-melting portion was converted to its sodium salt by adding a quarter of its weight of sodamide under nitrogen and stirring for 3h at 120 °C. Unreacted organic material was distd off at 120 °C/1mm. The sodium salts were hydrolysed with water, and the organic fraction was separated by steam distn, followed by fractional distn. Before use, the distillate was passed, under nitrogen, through a column of activated silica gel.
