The research was conducted by International Food Policy Research Institute and University of Pennsylvania. During the period of 1969 to 1977, the researchers asked the children in Guatemala to drink corn porridge which had been mixed with defatted milk powder and sugar, and asked the children in other regions to drink the traditional oatmeal. During 2002 to 2004, the researchers returned to Guatemala and gathered the examination scores of the children. According to the analyzed information, the children who had drunk corn porridge in the childhood could get higher scores in the area of reading comprehension and non-language cognition.
Corn contains a large number of nutrients, such as carbohydrate, protein, carotene and riboflavin. The content of vitamins contained in corn is much higher than that contained in wheat. In addition, each 100 grams of corn can provide nearly 300 milligrams of calcium for the human body. The content of glutamic acid contained in corn is also high. Glutamic acid can accelerate the metabolism of the brain and improve the intelligent development of the brain. The vitamins contained in the fat of corn can prevent the oxidation of the cells and the aging of the human body. The fatty acid contained in corn is mainly unsaturated fatty acid, such as linoleic acid and oleic acid. All these unsaturated fatty acids are useful substances to develop the brains for children. For the teenagers, they can develop the brains by eating corn. The small children should drink corn porridge, as it is not convenient for small children to eat corn directly.
According to the research, the first three years after the children were born is the best time for children to develop the brains.
