Preparation of ω-hydroxy acids by reduction of α,ω-methylene diesters with NaBH4

By reaction of the dicesium salts of long chain dicarboxylic acids (C atoms > 9) with methylene iodide the corresponding methylene diesters were prepared. These acylals, by reduction with NaBH₄ in THF, give the corresponding ω-hydroxy acids.
