A stereocontrolled chiral synthesis of the 1β-methylcarbapenem antibiotic precursor 3b has been accomplished.The factors influencing the stereochemical outcome of the catalytic hydrogenation of the 1-azabicyclo<4.2.0>octanes 4 and 12 are presented.
