Optically active functionalized bicyclo<2.2.1>heptane derivatives obtained by the asymmetric Diels-Alder cycloaddition of ethyl p-tolylsulfinylmethylenepropionate with cyclopentadiene provide the potentially useful intermediates for synthesis of bicyclic sesquiterpenes such as (+)-epi-β-stanalene.
