Direct lithiation of β-phenylthioacrylic acid and methyl propiolate affords useful β-lithioacrylate and β-lithiopropionate equivalents.This is demonstrated in this paper in a convenient synthesis of (+/-)-eldanolide (+/-)-1 and in the transformation of butenolide (+/-)-7 into butyrolactone (+/-)-9, respectively.
