Carbon dioxide co-ordinated to Ni⁰ is easily reduced to bound carbon monoxide by R-SH (R=H, alkyl, benzyl, phenyl, and substituted phenyl) and other Broensted acids, providing a reasonable model for the Ni-containing enzyme carbon monoxide dehydrogenase.
