A direct route to 1-aryl-4-(trifluoromethyl)penta-1,3-dienes is described using the Wittig-Horner reaction of diethyl (3-(trifluoromethyl)-but-2-enyl)phosphonate anion with aromatic aldehydes or trifluoroacetophenone.
