photoswitch. Finally, p-bis(AB)s showed the highest degree of
π conjugation extending over the two AB units, which results
in strong planarity of the molecule and relatively low QY (~1%).
Despite the lower isomerization QY, p-bis(AB)s are interesting
for molecular electronics applications. Their high degree of
conjugation allows conductance, which can be precisely
controlled (ON/OFF) via fast and reversible light-induced
switching. Overall, the current study delivers essential
understanding of the molecular behaviour of connected AB
and provides an excellent basis for the design and
development of new photochromic systems with extensive
and versatile application.
