The functionalized 2,3-trans-8,9-trans-9,10-cis-3,4,9,10-tetrahydro-2H,8H-pyrano<2,3-h>chromenes 4 and 6 represent the first naturally occurring condensed tannins with (2S,3R)-2,3-trans-(-)-catechin 'terminal' moieties; the structure of 4 is unequivocally confirmed by synthesis.
