Synthesis of the Ligand (HL)
The ligand (HL) was prepared by condensation between N-aminopyrimidine-2-thione
and 3-methoxy-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde (o-vanillin). The hot ethanol solution (30 mL) of
3-methoxy-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde (0.152 g, 1 mmol) and hot solution mixture of ethanol-
chloroform (7:3) (30 mL) of N-aminopyrimidine-2-thione (0.307 g, 1 mmol) were mixed
slowly with a constant stirring (see Figure 1). Then the mixture was refluxed for 12 h. An
orange precipitate was formed. The isolated solid precipitate was filtered off, washed with
hot ethanol and methanol and then dried in vacuum over P2O5.
Synthesis of the Complexes
The ligand (HL) of 1 mmol (0.441 g) was dissolved in chloroform and methanol mix-
ture (50 mL; 1:1, v/v) and a solution of 0.5 mmol of M(AcO)2·nH2O in 15 mL of methanol
was added drop-wise with continuous stirring. The mixture was stirred at 60 ◦C. The pre-
cipitated compound was removed by filtration, washed with hot methanol, and dried in vac-
uum desiccator. The complexes [Cu2(L)2(CH3COO)2], [Ni(L)2]·2.5H2O, [Co(L)2]·2H2O,
[Mn(L)2]·H2O, and [Cd(L)(CH3COO)]·H2O were synthesized by following the above pro-
cedure using Cu(CH3COO)2·H2O (0.5 mmol, 0.100 g), Ni(CH3COO)2·4H2O (0.5 mmol,
0.125 g), Co(CH3COO)2·4H2O (0.5 mmol, 0.125 g), Mn(CH3COO)2·4H2O (0.5 mmol,
0.123 g), and Cd(CH3COO)2·2H2O (0.5 mmol, 0.133 g).
