New access to spiranic β-lactams

N-benzyl α,β-unsaturated γ-oxoamides undergo under irradiation intramolecular hydrogen abstraction and consecutive cyclisation leading to spiranic β-lactams; Extension of the reaction to one spiranic oxapenam is also reported.
