Thermal activation of 2-methoxycarbonyl-4-methylalka-2,4,6-trienoic acids 1 affords bicyclic α-carboxy-γ-lactone esters (methyl 3,3a,4,6a-tetrahydro-6a-methyl-2-oxo-2H-cyclopenta[b]furan-3-carboxyla tes, 2) in high yields.
