4H-Pyrazolo[1,5-a]indole was prepared by two pathways employing the decarbonylation of 2-formyl-4H-pyrazolo[1,5-a]indole and the intramolecular cyclization of 1-(2'-carboethoxyphenyl)pyrazole as key reactions. The latter approach was found to be more practical than the former one.
