Cycloaddition of 3-methoxyestra-1,3,5(10),14,16-pentaen-17-yl acetate 1 with methyl propionate, followed by chemoselctive modification of the cycloadduct, furnishes intermediates for reduction-oxidative cleavage raection sequences, leading to the 14β-formyl analogue of estrone and related 14β-formyl-19-norsteroids.
