Both enantiomers of an 'open-chain' phosphonomethoxy analogue of cytidine 5'-monophosphate containing the tris(hydroxymethyl)methane moiety have been synthesised, in high enantiomeric excess, starting from (E)-2-(acetoxymethyl)-5-methylhex-3-en-1-ol of R configuration.
