Synthesis and mesomorphic properties of 1,10-dialkylpermethyldecasilanes

Decasilanes, R(SiMe₂)₁₀R where R = Et, Pr, and Bu, show the enantiotropic mesophase with a multilayer interdigitated structure. In the mesophase, the silicon chains adopt an almost all-trans conformation, and the decasilanes show absorption bands with maxima at 293 (R = Et) and 294 nm (R = Pr and Bu).
