Reaction of per-p-methoxybenzylated hexofuranoses and pentofuranoses with either a catalytic amount of tin chloride dihydrate (SnCl₂·2H₂O) or 0.5-10% solution of trifluoroaoetic acid in dichloromethane afforded regioselectively the corresponding monosaccharide derivatives having a single free hydroxyl group at C(5) in good yields.
