Selective hydrogenation of benzylideneacetone (PhCH=CHCOMe) catalysed by iridiumphosphine systems prepared in situ is reported.Depending on the steric properties of the phosphine employed and the P:Ir ratio, different species are formed in solution, as evidenced by n.m.r. spectroscopy.
