The room temperature ionic liquid, n-butylpyridinium tetrafluoroborate(BPyBF₄) is used as a "green" recyclable solvent for the reaction of 4-benzoylbutyric acid with [hydroxy-(2,4-dinitrobenzenesulfonyloxy)iodo]-benzene (HDNIB) to prepare 5-benzoyldihydro-2(3H)-furanone.
