The copper catalysed reaction of ethyl diazoacetate with tricarbonyl(cycloheptatriene)iron gave the expected 8-ethoxycarbonyl-homotropylidene complex.However, the analogous reaction with azibenzil afforded the unusual oxidized adduct, tricarbonyl<(η-5-8)-2,3-diphenyl-4H-cycloheptafuran>iron, whose structure was confirmed by a single crystal X-ray diffraction study.In both reactions hexacarbonyl(bicycloheptatrienyl)diiron was obtained.
