α-Hydroxyalkylation of β-(3,4-methylenedioxybenzyl)-γ-butyrolactone 5 with p-benzyloxybenzaldehyde, followed by cyclization, reduction of the lactone ring and removal of the benzyl group, afforded the lignan (+/-)-attenuol.
