2--1,2-dihydroisoquinaldonitrile (1) upon treatment with base yielded 5,6,13,14-didehydro-8-oxoberbine (3). 6,7-Dimethoxyisoquinoline gave 2--6,7-dimethoxy-1,2-dihydroisoquinaldonitrile (4) which reacted with base to yield 2,3-dimethoxy-5,6,13,14-didehydro-8-oxoberbine (5). 2-(o-Formylbenzoyl)-1,2-dihydroisoquinaldonitrile (7) reacted with base to form phthalideisoquinoline (10).
