Singlet p-nitrophenylsulphenium ions can be generated conveniently from the readily available NN-diacetyl-p-nitrophenylsulphenamide and trifluoroacetic acid, as confirmed by kinetic studies; it adds stereospecifically to olefins and substitutes into anisole quantitatively.
