[6] Recently Merck scientists[5a,b] were able to alleviate
the need for N-acetylenamide precursors, only requir-
ing simple primary enamines for one of their methods.
The ketone precursors for those studies were b-keto
esters.[5] The enantioselective reduction of N-acetylen-
amides of unfunctionalized ketones (aryl alkyl ketones
and pinacolone are the only viable substrates to date)
has been extensively examined, but the non-acylated
analogues are not viable substrates. Additionally, this
strategy requires four reaction steps (aryl alkyl ketone
to a-chiral primary amine) and is mediocre in overall
yield, but delivers the product in exceptional high ee,
