Synthesis of mixed halogenated trihalomethanes labelled with the stable isotopes 2H or 13C

²H and ¹³C-labelled bromodichloromethane and chlorodibromomethane were obtained in yields of 20 and 12% (for ²H) and 6 and 3% (for ¹³C) respectively from a convenient aluminum chloride-catalyzed reaction of bromoethane with commercially-available isotopically-substituted chloroform. The products were purified by preparative gas chromatography and-characterized by MS and ¹³C NMR, and by ¹H for the ¹³C-labelled material; mass and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy data are reported.
