Thermolysis of 4-alkynyl-3-azido-1,2-benzoquinones in refluxing benzene results in their conversion to (2-alynylethenyl)ketenes.These, in turn, cyclize to dipolar or diradical intermediates, which proceed to products via intra- or intermolecular trapping. This provides a very unusual entry to highly substituted cyanophenols.
