Primary aliphatic amines are oxidized to aldehydes by the Cu⁰/O2/AcOH system in acetonitrile.Kinetic measurements, particularly deuterium isotope effects studies, give support to the existence of a Cu(III) strong oxidant intermediate species in contrast with the Cu(I)/O2/pyridine oxidant system in which Cu(II) has the major role.
