The selective 1,2-hydrogenation of simple and functionalized conjugated dienes is catalyzed by preactivation of the binuclear palladium complex, [(Bu(t)₂PH)PdPBu(t)₂]₂ with oxygen, in THF at room temperature and 1 atm of hydrogen pressure, to form monoenes in excellent yield.
