Treatment of 5-bromo-2-methyl-8-nitroisoquinolinium salt (1-X) with alkali leads to the pseudobase 3 as an intermediate which disproportionates to the lactam 6 and to the dihydroisoquinoline 7.On the other side the polycyclic compound 5 is built by an intermelecular reaction: the structure of 5 is elucidated.
