2.3. General procedure for the synthesis of 4H-chromene derivatives
using benzylidene-malononitrile derivatives and
generally studied by a combination of characterization techniques,
including Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), Nuclear Magnetic Res-
onance (NMR) and Mass Spectrometry (MS). However, the struc-
tural determination of these compounds by single-crystal X-ray
diffraction (SCXRD) is rare in the literature, mainly due to the dif-
ficulty in obtaining single-crystals.
5,5-dimethylcyclohexane-1,3-dione
Benzylidene malononitrile derivatives 4a-j were obtained by
methodology described by Jimenez et al. [16].

a reactional flask (25 mL) were added benzylidene-
An efficient strategy, widely applied in organic synthesis to im-
prove reaction yields or decrease reaction time, is the use of mi-
crowave (MW) irradiation as a heating source. Herein, we report
a sustainable synthetic methodology of 4H-chromene derivatives
using aromatic aldehydes, 5,5-dimethyl-1,3-cyclohexadione, mal-
ononitrile or methyl cyanoacetate and H2O as solvent, under MW
irradiation.
malononitrile derivatives (1.0 mmol), 5,5-dimethylcyclohexane-1,3–
dione (1.0 mmol), triethylamine/H2O (10 mol% - 15 μL/4 mL). After
the reactional flask was put in the MW reactor (55 W) for 25 min
and stirred using internal magnetic stirring at 50 °C. The reactional
time was monitored by TLC using mixture of hexane and ethyl ac-
etate (8:2) and the plates were revealed with sublimated iodine
supported on silica gel. At the end of the reaction, was effectu-
ated an extraction with ethyl acetate (3 × 15 mL). The combined
organic phases were concentrated by vacuum until total evapora-
tion of the solvent and the product was purified by wash with heat
hexane and dichloromethane (1:1). All compounds were character-
ized by 1H and 13C NMR, FTIR and melting point (Supplementary
Material).

2.1. General methods
Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectra were recorded on Shi-
madzu IRAffinity-1 spectrometer model. Analysis were performed
using compressed tablets disks prepared with KBr. The transmit-

NMR spectra were recorded on an Agilent Technologies 500/54
Premium Shielded or Agilent Technologies 400/54 Premium
Shielded spectrometer, with DMSO-d6 or acetone-d6 as solvent
and tetramethylsilane (TMS) as the internal standard. The chemi-
cal shifts were expressed in ppm and coupling constants (J) val-
ues were reported in Hz. The chemical shifts (δ) were expressed
in parts per million (ppm) and referenced to the tetramethylsilane
internal standard (TMS) signal and the deuterated solvent used
DMSO-d6 (δH 2.50, δC 39.52) and acetone-d6 (δH 2.84 and 2.05, δC

For 13C NMR spectra the number of scans was 881.
In a reactional flask (25 mL) were added aromatic aldehydes
(1.0 mmol), malononitrile (1.0 mmol), 5,5-dimethylcyclohexane-
1,3–dione (1.0 mmol), triethylamine/H2O (20 mol% - 30 μL/4 mL).
After the reactional flask was put in the MW (55 W) for 60 min
and stirred by internal magnetic stirring at 50 °C. The reactional
time was monitored by TLC using a mixture of hexane and ethyl
acetate (8:2) and the plates were revealed with sublimated iodine
supported on silica flash. At end of the reaction, was effectuated an
extraction with ethyl acetate (3 × 15 mL). The combined organic
phases were concentrated by vacuum until total evaporation of the
solvent and the product was purified by wash with heat hexane
and dichloromethane (1:1). All compounds were characterized by
1H and 13C NMR, FTIR and melting point (Supplementary Material).
The microwave irradiation experiments were performed using
a Discover System from CEM Corporation at a 2.45 GHz frequency
with maximal power output of about 200 W with internal mag-
netic stirring. For the reactions the power of the microwave reactor
used was 55 W.
2.5. General procedure for the synthesis of 4H-chromene derivatives
via one-pot reaction between aromatic aldehydes methyl
cyanoacetate and 5,5-dimethylcyclohexane-1,3-dione
Melting points were measured in a Fisatom model 431 melting
point apparatus.
The single-crystal X-ray diffraction data were collected at
room temperature on an Agilent-Rigaku Super Nova diffractome-
ter equipped with CCD detector system and using Mo radiation
(λ = 0.71073A).
In
a reaction flask (25 mL) were added aromatic alde-
hydes (1.0 mmol), methyl cyanoacetate (1.0 mmol), 5,5-
dimethylcyclohexane-1,3–dione (1.0 mmol), triethylamine/H2O
(20 mol% - 30 μL/4 mL). After the reaction flask was put in the
MW reactor (55 W) for 180 min and stirred (internal magnetic
stirring) at 85 °C. The reaction progress was monitored by TLC
using a mixture of hexane and ethyl acetate (7:3) and the plates
were revealed with sublimated iodine immobilized on silica. At
end of the reaction time, was effectuated an extraction with
ethyl acetate (3 × 15 mL). The combined organic phases were
concentrated by vacuum until total evaporation of the solvent. The
product was purified by column chromatography with silica gel
using a mixture of hexane-ethyl acetate in varying proportions
from 7:3 to 1:1. All compounds were characterized by 1H and
13C NMR, HRMS, FTIR and when it was possible by melting point
(Supplementary Material).
