Almost pure α-VOPO4.2H2Opowder was obtained by a vapor-phase reaction between POCl3, VOCl3, and water at about 763K in the presence of oxygen.Although α-VOPO4.2H2O changed into α- and β-VOPO4 in the calcination in N2, it was transformed into (VO)2P2O7 and a small amount of β-VOPO4 by in situ activation at 733 K at the heating rate of 10 K min-1 in a C4H10-O2-N2 stream, the resulting catalysts effected the selective oxidation of butane to maleic anhydride comparable to pure (VO)2P2O7.
