fitting the gas phase data necessitates a substantial Fermi
resonance parameter, although most of the progressions are
still quite regular. Perhaps most interesting is the matrix as-

ground and excited state combination differences, residuals, and predomi-

lowed by the large value of the spin–orbit coupling constant
in one of the states, which must approximate case c coupling.
We have searched out LIF spectra for these transitions but
can find no trace of them, suggesting that the breakdown of
the usual selection rule is due to the influence of the matrix.

This work is dedicated to Dr. William Weltner, Jr. on the
occasion of his retirement from the Department of Chemistry
of the University of Florida after 37 years of teaching and
research. The authors thank Mr. Brandon Tackett and Dr.
David A. Hostutler for their assistance in operating the in-
strumentation. We also thank Anthony Merer for a stimulat-
ing discussion concerning vibronic coupling and the
Renner–Teller effect. This research was supported by the
National Science Foundation.
